Self Soothe vs. Self-Care
Self-care can easily be confused with self-soothing. Oftentimes, one can fall into the habit of self-soothing and call it self-care. Sometimes self-soothing can be an escape which hinders growth. One can have emotional pain that is so heavy that they can spend entire days simply escaping: sleeping, movies, cookie dough, pampering, etc.. Seth Godin put it this way, “Instead of wondering when our next vacation is, we should set up a life we don’t need to escape from.” .
For this reason I created a list of differences between self soothing and self care. Hopefully the list can help someone understand that they need to be grounded in order to become mentally healthy. Self soothing is temporary to relieve our senses of stress. Self care is consistent. .
